Build international and domestic pressure to end all forms of torture in Vietnam.
Police place their hands over the mouth of Father Nguyen Van Ly to prevent him from speaking at his own trial in March 2007, where he was sentenced to prison for his pro-democracy activities.
Our Work:
We monitor and reportinstances of torture and mistreatment of detainees and prisoners in Vietnam, and we support and defend courageous individuals and civil society organizations in Vietnam who do the same.
We advocatefor humane treatment of detainees and prisoners in Vietnam and an end to torture and other abuses in Vietnamese prisons, jails, police stations, re-education centers, psychiatric institutions and other places of detention.
We urge the Vietnamese government to stop the systematic torture by law enforcement officials of people who have been arrested for peacefully exercising their rights to freedom of expression, association, assembly, and religious belief, or for seeking protection and political asylum abroad.
We propose specific recommendationsto the Vietnamese government and international stakeholders on practical approaches to systematically prevent and abolish torture in Vietnam.
We invite human rights organizations, community based groups, churches and religious organizations, and individual advocates to join us in this effort.
